IT'S the biggest get-together of Australia's Serbian community and it's held right here in south-west Sydney. For the 24th year running, last weekend the Serbian Folkloric Festival attracted big crowds at the Bonnyrigg Sports Club. Close to 8000 people attended over the three days that displayed Serbian culture and its traditions. The performers, more than 1000 of them, came from all over Australia, plus guests from Serbia and a host of local VIPs. There were displays of Serbian traditional dancing and singing and many stalls offering Serbian food delicacies as well as entertainment for children.

Bonnyrigg White Eagles shown celebrating their Premiership victory over West Sydney Berries
Bonnyrigg White Eagles were presented the Premiers trophy on a very successful afternoon at Bonnyrigg Sports Club on Sunday.

Brian Brown's men, who have arguably been the most consistent outfit over the twenty-two round competition, sealed an impressive 5-1 defeat of West Sydney Berries to enter the finals series full of confidence.

Daniel Severino grabbed a first-half brace to send the White Eagles on their way to victory – the first via the penalty-spot before Brad Boardman provided Severino with a fine square pass for the easiest of finishes. Nathan Elasi added a third before the break with a fine finish across the goalkeeper before Stefan De Jesus pulled a goal back after the break, pouncing on a loose ball in the penalty-area.

Phillip Zabaks made his return to the Bonnyrigg line-up following his serious head injury earlier in the season, and the shot-stopper was in good touch, showing confidence in his approach to the match.

Jamie McMaster scored the White Eagles' fourth from the penalty-spot before David Gullo picked up the scraps in the Berries penalty-area to make it 5-1.

Blacktown City FC sealed second-spot on the League ladder with an emphatic 6-1 defeat of Bankstown City. In Peter Tsekenis' final match as a footballer, Bankstown City failed to send out their player/coach on a winning note on a rather difficult afternoon for the Lions who finished the match with nine-men. After the Lions missed an early penalty via Robbie Mileski, the Tolgay Ozbey show commenced for the visitors. Ozbey beat the offside trap in the 22' minute to slot home past Joseski before the Lions were reduced to ten-men. Richard Luksic was given a straight red card for a wild challenge, though as the Lions number 5 left the field and the other players protested the decision, Ozbey hit the free-kick from distance into an empty net for a two-goal lead. Despite further protests, the goal stood.

Bonnyrigg White Eagles' Premiership celebrations have been put on hold following Rockdale City Suns' last gasp showing at Bonnyrigg Sports Club on Saturday evening, denying the White Eagles their first piece of silverware since returning to the top flight – at least for one week anyway.

Bonnyrigg led the Suns 1-0 courtesy of Brad Boardman's well-taken effort from close-range on 65' minutes, though the Suns scraped a draw in the 5' minute of injury-time, much to the disbelief of the Bonnyrigg supporters. Bonnyrigg goalkeeper Ali Akbal was adjudged to have handled the ball outside of the penalty-area, leaving the referee with no choice but to award a free-kick. And, with ultimately the last kick of the match, Adem Kir curled his free-kick into the back of the net to snare the Suns their twelfth League draw in 2010.

The draw keeps Rockdale's hopes of finals football alive, though the Suns will need to rely on results to go their way in the closing two weeks of the regular season. As for Bonnyrigg, Brian Brown's men still hold a strong five-point lead at the top of the table, two weekends out from the finals.

At Marconi Stadium, a very patient Manly United FC conceded the initiative to the Stallions, though came out on top with a 2-0 win in a rather scrappy affair. Goals to Robbie Cattanach and David Dodd in the closing 20' minutes of the match secured the Cromer Park side the points, as Craig Midgley's men further eased their relegation fears with this vital victory.

NSW Premier League Round 20 Preview

premier_nsw_soccer_logoBonnyrigg White Eagles have the chance to mathematically secure top-spot on Saturday evening when Rockdale City Suns visit Bonnyrigg Sports Club. Brian Brown's men hold a seven-point lead over their closest rival, and three-points on Saturday will secure the side the Premiership.

The White Eagle shave been in good nick in recent weeks, illustrated by the fine run of results. Jamie McMaster and Daniel Severino have been immense for the side out of midfield, with the hard work of Milorad Simonovic to compliment the side both with and without the ball. Upfront, burly striker Brad Boardman has enjoyed a fine run of form, and will be up for a few more goals heading towards the finals series.

The visiting Rockdale City Suns hold an incredible record for draws in 2010, the side currently on eleven out of their nineteen matches played to-date. Mile Todorovski's men are a very well-organised unit, and the White Eagles may well run into some difficulty in breaking the team from Rockdale down. Todorovski's midfield men Dominic Hudap and Pece Cvetanovski will be key to the side's chances, though the Suns will need goals to pull off an upset. Averaging one-goal a game, the Suns will need to secure maximum points to stand any chance of a late surge into the finals series.

At Seymour Shaw, Sutherland Sharks' finals ambitions go on the line when Blacktown City visit Miranda. The Sharks have slipped outside of the Top-Five, and will require a win against the second-placed Blacktown City FC to keep their finals ambitions alive. The Sharks trail A.P.I.A.-Leichhardt Tigers by two-points, though George Souris & Co. will be eager to make the most of home ground advantage this weekend.
